On any given night, thousands of musicians are playing somewhere in New York, and a lot of them are in rooms you could walk right past without ever knowing they were there. A jazz trio in a basement, a residency in the back of a bar in Bed-Stuy, a band a few weeks away from selling out a loft in Ridgewood. There has never been a shortage of talent in this city. The hard part has always been finding out where it is tonight.
That information lives in a hundred different places, scattered across a venue's website, an Instagram account, a flyer in a window, a promoter's story that disappears by morning. Keeping up with all of it is the work we took on. the fringe follows hundreds of venues across the five boroughs, from the big halls with their own box offices to the small spaces that post a lineup the day of the show, and brings what's on into one place you can actually read.
We pay the closest attention to the small rooms, because they are the easiest to miss and they are where most of this city's music really begins. The two-hundred-cap club, the loft show, the DIY space that quietly keeps selling out. The big venues have the staff and the budgets to make sure you hear about them, and for a long time the small ones had little more than word of mouth. Now they have us.
